  • At age 13 he was a son of a shoe maker in Stuttgart, Germany
  • and one of nine children to feed. By age 15 he had moved with
  • his father and family to the new world as indentured servants
  • for payment of passage. In 1835 (age 33) he married a 22 year
  • old Elizabeth Knifer also from Germany. In 1855 he and son Jacob
  • walked to Johnson Co. Iowa to visit a neighbor who moved there.
  • In the spring of 1856 he moved his family there to start a farm.
  • In 1867 they moved again to Missouri and finally to Kansas in 1876.

  • By 1876 the Chamberlains had taken advantage of the Homestead Act and had
  • claimed land in Kansas, after a move by covered wqagon, with their son.
  • They later lived near Lincoln on the homestead of his father.

  • Enlisted Aug 8, 1862, to the 22nd Iowa Volunteers, Company H.
  • Wounded in the leg and arm, and hospitalized. fought battles
  • near and around the Mississippi river for the Union North.
  • Mustered out as a Corporal Aug 1865. He enlisted with Allen
  • Cloud, his first wife's father and third wife's husband.
  • Bought a hotel in Ocheyedan, Iowa near Sibley in the late 1880's
  • Jacob's ten children were girls; being a farmer was especially
  • difficult! Finally he bought a hotel in a small Iowa town, and the
  • girls were good help with that venture. Both mothers of his
  • children died from complcations after childbirth. The fifth
  • and sixth baby girls were twins - dying shortly after birth.
  • After returning for visits to Iowa, from Kansas, he married a third
  • time at age 67. Nette was his first wife's step mother!

  • She taught school in Iowa before coming with her father to Kansas where
  • she also taught. She taught school near her older sister's home in
  • N. Dakota. Returning to Kansas she married Sim Titsworth a couple years
  • after his first wife died (Christena Pfaff-Mannen's daughter - Lucy).
  • She became a "battered woman" (Sim spent some time in jail) and was
  • granted a divorce. She was a very independent and started using Miss
  • Pfaff again. She and her sister Reba owned some land and raised cattle
  • near Salina, KS before moving to Lincoln. She died in a nursing home
  • near Salina

  • 414 MAGGIE PFAFF
  • She must have felt like a lost little girl. Maggie was less than
  • two when twins were born and soon died. Then mother Lucy died a
  • few weeks later - after Christmas! Jake and his four girls went
  • by covered wagon to Missouri to live with his parents who farmed
  • there. Maggie is said to have died in 1878 from a contageous
  • disease. But a photo shows the four sisters with a lady who
  • probably is Rebecca who married Jacob in 1882, after his return
  • to Iowa.

  • She was never well, the whole family tried various ways to nurse her
  • into good health. Georgia was only five when the family made the move
  • to Kansas, without a mother's guiding hand. The girls and "Papa" lived
  • with the grandparents Pfaff until Jacob could build the small but sturdy
  • stone house where she died. Her death came after Measles and a mastoid
  • ear infection.

  • "Aunt Rebie" spent much time with the Boyers, helping the children
  • and thier ailing mother. Her sister Bertha died and Reba became a
  • second mother by marrying Clarence and carrying on the family paterns
  • as much as possible. Before this, she had lived at Lincoln and
  • Manhatten, Kansas. She also worked in a factory in Salina and a
  • telephone office at Victor, Kansas. The boyers lived in Colby, Kansas.
  • After his death Reba lived in Colorado with sister Mary and in Lincoln,
  • Kansas with sister Blanche.

  • 405 Henry Pfaff .
  • Enlisted Sept. 20, 1861, Company G of the eighth Iowa
  • Infantry Volunteers. Taken prisioner at the battle of
  • Shiloh, and held in Alabama with Malaria. He was exchanged
  • and furloughed home before the eighth was reorganized.
  • Later he was swindled out of his farm after running
  • into hard times.
  • After Henry was mustered out, he taught in northern
  • missouri and fell in love with one of his pupils. He married
  • this daughter of a well-known family whose father was Judge
  • A. W. Allen. They farmed nearby, but later henry decided
  • to join other members of his own family, and got homestead
  • claim in Kansas. This Pfaff family was hit by streaks of
  • "bad luck" and finally lost their claim - moved to Lincoln
  • and Henry took up carpentry. There were eight children - a
  • sickly one died within a year. "Aunt Margery" was beloved
  • by town folk as a real care-giver.

  • Her husbands parents came from Ireland, and settled to farming in
  • Missouri. She met Len Mannen near Eagleville, Missouri when
  • her family moved there. They homesteaded near the Chamberlains
  • in Lincoln, Kansas. They also raised the children of their third
  • daughter.

  • Isaac came to Kansas with his parents, homestaeding his own 160
  • acres near other Pfaff families. He and Mel gave a corner of
  • their land for a community graveyard where they buried a baby son.
  • They were making fine progress improving their farm when a disastrous
  • fire took Isaac's life.

  • As a saalesman, meat cutter, and farmer, Bob moved his family a lot.
  • They lived in Beloit, near Lincoln, Kansas, in Texas, and Littleton,
  • Colorado. After his death Marry lived with a daughter in Englewood,
  • Colorado - then in Phoenix, Arizona to be near one of Olive's sons.
  • She died there but was buried in Littleton, Colorado. Mary was very
  • creative - did special hand work until she was nearly one hundred
  • years old. She wanted her direct descendants to have something she
  • had made!

  • The Boyers reared thier dozen children in central and western Kansas
  • Both passed on artistic talent. Clarence enjoyed calligraphy as a
  • hobby. Bertha was creative in her housekeeping. She died at 44
  • after gallstone surgery, when her youngest was under six.

  • 430 HOMER PFAFF
  • His first wife died of turberculosis. He then remarried and taught
  • school for a time. Later he became a pharmacist. Moving from Lincoln
  • to Roseburg, Oregon, Homer worked in a Veteran's Hospital there.
  • He became a druggist in Seattle, Washington, marrying a regular
  • customer of the store he managed. Homer had served in the Navy in
  • World War I, and when he retired started building a cabin cruiser
  • in his back yard. Although he completed the boat he never got it
  • to the water, but said his dream had been completed.
  • Homer was also responible for much of the written history on the Pfaff's.
