Ellen, The Walling family begins with Thomas who came from Eng. prior to 1646, to Providence to join Roger William's Colony. He was prob. a widower with 1 son Thomas.

Thomas II has 2 wives and 6 sons.

Thomas III m. Sarah Elwell and moved to New Jersey. They had 8 sons.

Their son Elisha b. 1708, m. Mary Blevins and moved to Pittsylvania Co VA c. 17145. They had 5 sons: Thomas, Elisha Jr. (the famous Longhunter), Joseph, James and John. There are not documents linking Elisha to any of their children. The only "doc" is that their dau. Margery's grdau. told her grdau. about the family and that has been preserved. I have never seen a copy of the original,it it still exists, but it has been widely quoted. I have not seen anything in it disproved, however, it has omissions.

The Blevin's family historians do not like to use it as the only proof of the "marriage of Elisha and Mary." The faimly prior to that is solidly documented. The Elisha family, however, depends on tradition and association. Four of the five sons have some documentation concerning their children. The eldest, Thomas b c 1730, m. Mary Cox, prob. by 1750. They had a very large family and there is not documentation that I know of between Thomas and any of his ch. Therefore, it is easy to attribute unknown persons to Thomas. Brittain is said to be the son of Evan.

Do you know about Evan? I have some data on him, primarily census and tax records which I will give you if you do not have any of that. Brittain is in the 1850 c. age 43 with wife Mary, 32 b TN, and 7 ch.

There is another James Walling who died in MadisonCo. Ky in 1796 and left a will naming some ch. There is thought that Evan was one of his unnamed sons. This James is prob. the son of one of Elisha Sr's brothers. My main question to you is about YOUR use of the name BLEVINS with Martha and James. In your note you call them Martha Blevins and James Blevins. I know of no Blevins connection to this family. If there is one it sheds new light on ther identity. Was it just mental glitch as I have all the time and you meant to type Walden?

I thought that I had lost your email address, but I found it in storage.

Our Walling family begins with Thomas Walling who was in Plymouth very early. Ralph and Joyce Walden may have been his parents or relatives. They came to Plymouth in 1623. Very early records show our Thomas in Plymouth as well. Thomas married Mary Abbott, the daughter of Daniel Abbott. When Thomas and Mary were planning to be married, Roger Williams, the famous pioneer for religious freedom, wrote a letter to the town fathers at Providence, Rhode Island where Thomas had moved. The Abbott family were quite active in extant records in the Providence area.

Thomas Walling II, the son of Thomas and Mary Abbott Walling, married Sarah Elwell. They lived in Salem Co New Jersey. Her family, the Elwells and the Bassetts, are mentioned often in records as well. Before Thomas II left Providence, he is listed as on of 27 citizens who stayed and not went away with the other 2/3 of the men of the community. the 27 protected the town of Providence during the Indian war known as King Phillip's War.

Their son Elisha Walling married Mary Blevins. Some researchers indicate that this Elisha was the longhunter mentioned in history. Others feel that his son, Elisha, was the longhunter with whom Daniel Boone traveled. Elisha and group also named many of the landmarks near the Cumberland Gap. There is Walden's Ridge and Walling, a town. Also other landmarks are purportly named by the group. There was a company known as Walling/Skaggs/Cox/and Blevins is believe that was supposed to have done quite well financially. We know Mary's father's name but not much else. There were a number of other Blevins in records. There is also another Blevins/Walling marriage.

The son of Elisha and Mary Blevins Walling, James who married Mary White, is our next ancestor. James was in the American Revolution in the navy on the Liberty. He was also captain of an armed vessel known as the Rattletrap.

James' son John Walling who married Anna Chisum is next. John and several of his children moved to Texas when Texas was still a part of Mexico. He held several offices in early Texas government. There has been quite a controvery for generations over land owned by John Walling on which oil was discovered in East Texas. Millions or billions of dollars are supposedly held in escrow because the heir has never been established.

Thomas Jefferson Walling , the son of John, built a log cabin in 1844. This cabin was moved to a museum in Henderson, Texas. It is the most highly documented log cabin in Texas. There exists a 150 page document on this cabin. Also in 1875, Thomas Jefferson gave an interview of his recollections of early Texas. It is quite interesting. CyBell Walling, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Walling and his wife Nancy Ann Price is the last in my line to carry the Walling surname. She married Joseph McKinley Keener. We have a copy of her application to the Daughters of the Confederacy which has some interesting info. Let me know about your Walling/Blevins connections. Thanks,

Laura Howell

I am most interesting in helping with the Walling/Blevins family information. As I indicated earlier, I have much Wallling information and a small amount on the Blevins family.

In a book by Bruce and Maribelle Wilder there are several pages which mention Blevins associations. My seven great grandfather, Elisha Walling, married Mary Blevins, the daughter of William Blevins.Elisha Walling was the son of Thomas and Sarah Elwell Walling. He was born 26 Jul 1708 in Salem County, New Jersey. Elisha is described as follows: "large and dark" by a great-great graddaughter, Mattie Rice Howard. Mary Blevins Walling was "fair and neat". Their son, James, was my ancestor. The date of birth given for Mary Blevins Walling is c1710. The source of this information is BLEVINS ANCESTRY compiled by Bill Dwayne Blevins, (Salt Lake City: Library of the Genealogical Society, 1972) I have never seen this source. In the 1767 Tithable Lists of Pittsylvania County, Va the following Wallings and Blevins are found. Elisha Walling Senior, Little Wm Blevins, Elisha Walling, John Blevins (son of Daniel), John Blevins Senior, James Blevins, Junior, and Dillion Blevins.

There is another Blevins-Walling marriage. Catherine, daughter of Elisha and Catherine Elizabeth Wallen, married Henry Blevins. There is a small amount of other information in this book about the Blevins family.

Alfred Walling of San Antonio told me tonight on the phone that there was a fur company called Walling/Skaggs/Cox/Blevins Company. He says that it was very successful..

In the book ELISHA WALLEN, The Longhunter, by Carolyn D. Wallin, there are further references to the Blevins family.

Let me know to which family you have a connection. If you would like I can copy pages from these books or send information on where they may be purchased.

I have two books which were published by Maribelle and Bruce Wilder which are Walling genealogies. I also have a book by Carolyn Wallin called Elisha Wallen The Longhunter, or something similar. My great-great grandmother CyBell Walling Keener was born in 1844 in the Republic of Texas. Her family was part of a chain migration of Wallings and related families that came to Texas when it was still part of Mexico in 1833. Some of the family received a league and a labor of land which is over 4,000 acres of land for $200.00. Other family members received thousands of acres for serving in the battle of San Jacinto and other battles.

I do not have my information here with me. To the best of my memory my Walling line goes back some 12 generations to the immigrants who came to New Plymouth Colony in the early 1600's. The names that I can remember are as follows:

CyBell C. Walling m. Joseph McKinley Keener
Thomas Jefferson Walling m. Nancy Ann Price
John Walling m. Anna Chisum

I am not sure without looking it up the next generation. The others that I can remember only names are Thomas Walling, several generations, wives are Mary Abbott, the daughter of Daniel Abbot, Sarah Elwell, and one other. Also I descend from Elisha Walling who some claim is the longhunter. Carolyn Wallin says in her book that the son, Elisha, is the long hunter. Several months ago, a relative from Iowa sent some info on longhunters whch was very interesting. The wife of my Elisha ws a Blevins. We are not positive of her lineage.

This has become quite lengthy. I have much info on the Wallings and I would be glad to share it with you.
